  1. Bilharzia, or schistosomiasis Disease that
  2. causes anaemia, inflammation, formation of
  3. scar tissue, dysentery, enlargement of the
  4. spleen and liver, and cirrhosis of the liver.
  5. It is contracted by bathing in water
  6. contaminated with human sewage. Some 300
  7. million people are thought to suffer from
  8. this disease in the tropics. Freshwater
  9. snails that live in this water act as host to
  10. the first larval stage of flukes of the genus
  11. Schistosoma; when these larvae leave the
  12. snail in their second stage of development,
  13. they are able to pass through human skin,
  14. become sexually mature, and produce
  15. quantities of eggs, which pass to the
  16. intestine or bladder. The human host
  17. eventually dies of the infestation, but
  18. before then numerous eggs have passed from
  19. the body in urine or faeces to continue the
  20. cycle. Treatment is by means of drugs,
  21. usually containing antimony, to kill the
  22. parasites.
